The President of IAOTP, Stephanie Cirami, declared, We are honored to have Mr. Mariotti as part of the IAOTP family. He is a talented author and successful entrepreneur who provides visionary leadership that empowers people worldwide. We look forward to celebrating all his merits at the Annual Awards Gala and cannot wait to read more amazing literary works from him.

Before embarking on his current professional path, Mr. Mariotti earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Economics and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan. In 1990, Mr. Mariotti was granted an Honorary Ph.D. in Business and Entrepreneurship by Johnson & Wales University.

Steve Mariotti’s career has touched nearly every aspect of business. He has brought entrepreneurship and business ownership to millions, through both his nonprofit NFTE, in operation since 1988, and the millions of copies of his many books. He started his career as the youngest senior analyst in Ford Motor Company’s history, before heading a team in their International Finance Department that developed systems (still in place today) which lowered the company’s borrowing costs and saved over $2 million dollars a year.  Mr. Mariotti also helped draft portions of Ford’s initial policy against South African apartheid, in 1979, with legendary civil rights leader and social activist Leon Sullivan. Mr. Mariotti then left Ford  to start  Mason Import/Export Services, in New York City.  He felt called upon to teach and work with urban youth, so he sold his business to become a public-school special education teacher in some of the toughest New York City neighborhoods, including Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, the South Bronx, and Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

In 1987, in a South Bronx classroom dedicated to  students who had dropped out of high school, Mr. Mariotti launched the South Bronx Entrepreneurial Education Project. Inc., which soon became the National Foundation for Teaching entrepreneurship, a non-profit commonly known as NFTE (and pronounced “Nifty”). NFTE’s mission (renamed the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship) was and is to teach low-income youth the basic principles of entrepreneurship and wealth creation so they can find their individual pathways to success. NFTE has served more than 1,000,000 youth globally with entrepreneurship education. Twenty-two states and 12 countries are using Mr. Mariotti’s textbooks.  Mr. Mariotti’s curriculum has also been used to train more than 12,000 specialized entrepreneurship teachers worldwide.

After teaching math and entrepreneurship at Rikers Island, New York City’s main prison complex, and one of the largest jails in America, Mr. Mariotti and Mr. Joseph Robinson co-founded Inmates Teaching Entrepreneurship and Mentorship (ITEM) in 1995. ITEM is a prison-based program that teaches inmates how to share the basics of business ownership with their children and with fellow inmates. This program soon spread to other prisons and became a national model.

Mr. Mariotti is a sought-after speaker, lecturer, and a regular contributor to the Huffington Post. He presented a paper at the 9th Davos conference, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Affairs. He has published innumerable articles and has authored or co-authored 43 books and manuals. He has served as a motivational coach to empower entrepreneurs worldwide, and has spoken as an entrepreneurship expert at the Aspen Ideas Festival, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Brown, UC Berkeley, Georgetown, Baylor, and Babson College. Mr. Mariotti has also traveled, as a guest of the US State Department, to Southeast Asia, in order to share his expertise in entrepreneurial education with their emerging economies. Mr. Mariotti’s recent Amazon best-selling books include Profiles in Grit: Why Entrepreneurs Triumph Over Trauma, and Goodbye Homeboy: How My Students Drove Me Crazy and Inspired a Movement. He is the executive producer of the PBS docu-series, Triumph Over Trauma – The Rise of the Entrepreneur, and is currently promoting his new book, Triumph Over Trauma: How Entrepreneurship Transforms Victims into Survivors

Over the course of his renowned career, Mr. Mariotti has received many awards and accolades, and has been recognized worldwide for his outstanding leadership and commitment to his profession. This year, Mr. Mariotti will be interviewed on TIP Radio, and will be featured on the Planet Hollywood Billboard on the Las Vegas Strip; and he graced the Front Cover of TIP (Top Industry Professionals) Magazine. As a member of IAOTP, Mr. Mariotti has been honored on several occasions.  In 2020, he was selected for IAOTP’s Lifetime Achievement Award, in addition to being selected as Top Global Social Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2019, he was featured on the famous Reuters Building in Times Square, and was honored at the Bellagio Hotel for his selection as Top Entrepreneur of the Year. He has also received the Bernard A. Goldhirsh Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the National Director’s Entrepreneurship Award from the United States Department of Commerce, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, the ACE/Currie Foundation’s Humanitarian Venture Award, the Salvatori Award, and the Society of Entrepreneurial Educators (SEE) first award for Outstanding Educator.  Mr. Mariotti has been selected to be featured in multiple volumes of Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in Finance and Business, and Who’s Who in the World

Looking back, Mr. Mariotti attributes his success to his education, to the mentors he has had along the way, and his passion for helping people. He says his work is extremely gratifying and hopes that others will consider a teaching career in low-income communities. When not working, he enjoys chess, hiking, collecting rare books, and attending seminars at the Institute for Advanced Studies in his hometown of Princeton, NJ.  For the future, he hopes to continue making a difference in people’s lives any way that he can.
