Metro Detroit Chef Matt Schellig Wins Recognized By American Culinary Federation

A well known and respected Metro Detroit Chef is adding another medal to his collection that he received during the National Convention for the American Culinary Federation (ACF) in July.

An accomplished and well respected Metro Detroit Chef has another award to add to his list. Chef Matt Schellig has won the Central Regional Championship and second overall for the National Chef of the Year through the ACF. Schellig was also  inducted into the American Academy of Chefs (AAC), the honor Society of the ACF.

The events took place at the ACF National Convention in Las Vegas at the end of July. He’s no stranger to being recognized for his work, in 2019 the Michigan Chefs de Cuisine Association (MCCA) named him chef of the year, and in 2018 he was recognized as the MCCA’s Chef Educator of the Year.

“The most accomplished cooks and the cooks with the best potential are obsessed with constantly learning and doing more. These are the people that get done with an event or competition and regardless of the outcome are thinking of ways that they can do it better next time.”

Chef Matt loves to compete in culinary competitions.  He has over 4 dozen medals and 5 gold medals. Chef Matt’s culinary career has also taken him across the globe to various cooking competitions. In 2014, he participated in the Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg where he won a bronze medal in the single exhibitor chefs category. Back in 2016, Schellig participated in the International Culinary Olympics in Erfurt, Germany.

He is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has worked as a culinary instructor and program director at the Dorsey College’s Culinary Arts Program in Roseville since 2012.

Before Schellig’s career turned toward education, he used his culinary skills in delicious kitchens around Metro Detroit  including the Morels, Rattlesnake Club, A Matter of Taste, Duet, Zazios, and the Novi ChopHouse.

For now, Chef Schellig is always eager to get back in the competition kitchen,  and is passionate about leading the next generation of culinarians. Additionally he and his two partners, Jeremy Abbey & John Piazza,  are currently representing the World Food Safety Organisation (WFSO) in  developing an accredited global standard sanitation program for food industry professionals.
